FCT testing (functional testing) and ICT testing (in-line circuit testing) are both essential components of PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly) testing, and they play a critical role in the circuit board production process. Although both aim to ensure product quality, there are distinct differences in their testing methods, purposes, and application scenarios.

1. Test Methodology and Focus:
ICT testing utilizes the bed needle (pinbed) method for testing through physical contact, focusing on examining the electrical properties of the electronic components (passive and active) and wires of the printed circuit board, such as the circuit's open, short, resistive, capacitive, inductor, diode, and transistor parameters.
FCT testing is conducted while the board is powered on, simulating external conditions and input signals to test the board's functionality to ensure it can function properly as designed. It focuses on the final function of the product, such as whether the button is responsive, whether the sensor is accurate, whether the communication is normal, etc.
2. Purpose of testing and application stages:
ICT testing is mostly carried out in the early stage of the production line, with the main purpose of quickly finding defects in production, improving production efficiency and reducing costs. It detects and repairs any issues that may arise during component placement or soldering in a timely manner.
FCT testing is usually arranged in the production line, which focuses on whether the product can work properly according to the design requirements. FCT testing helps ensure that products coming down the production line can meet the needs of end users and improve product reliability and stability.
3. Difference in test content and focus:
ICT testing focuses more on hardware-level detection, such as soldering quality, missing components, etc.
FCT testing pays more attention to the comprehensive functions of software and hardware, such as firmware loading, collaboration of various functional modules on the circuit board, etc.
In general, although ICT testing and FCT testing have their own focuses, they jointly ensure the quality of the circuit board and provide a guarantee for the stability and reliability of the product. In the complete production test process, the two are complementary and indispensable.
